The image to left shows an avanced SUPERFICIAL SPREADING MELANOMA,
covering a skin area of 11*6 CM. At the lesion's periphery, the tumor is
still growing progressively, while in the central parts of the tumor
area it has undergone PARTIAL TUMOR REGRESSION. This is a common finding
in larger-area cases of SUPERFICIAL SPREADING MELANOM, and can be
clinically seen by its white color tint within the black tumor area.
Microscopic analysis (HISTOLOGY) shows that in these areas of PARTIAL
TUMOR REGRESSION tumor cells had been more or less replaced by fibrotic
tissue, following an inflammatory reaction within the tumor (which can
be detected under the microscope only). While the tumor virtually
destroys itself in the center, it nonetheless progressively grows at the
periphery, thereby getting more and more malignant.
The image to the right shows the skin aspect of a widely
disseminated/metastatic melanoma, originating from a spot on the
forefoot. This finding comes along with internal/visceral metastases to
the lung, brain, liver, and other organ sites.
