SUPERFICIAL SPREADING MELANOMA (SSM) SUPERFICIAL SPREADING MELANOMA (SSM)

The image to the left shows a SUPERFICIAL SPREADING MELANOMA. This is the most common melanoma type. It starts as a flat pigmented skin lesion, that enlarges in size over a few months, thereby changing its border contours from regular to irregular. In doing so, marked indentations and protrusions at the lesion's periphery become visible. Eventually, it exhibits a vertical growth phase, to be seen as embedded nodular components within the largely flat lesion. The right image shows a similar finding in a larger magnification view. The nodular component can be seen clearly in the upper left corner of the lesion.
